Please scroll down for new photos. I am still working on all of this.
The first thing that people notice when coming into our wedding chapel or when visiting our web site is the money hanging on our ceiling. They ask what’s all the money hanging on the ceiling for. We tell them the story of the money. In 2001, just after performing a wedding, the bride asked “when do I get to sign my new married name.” I told her that we just finished signing all the legal paperwork and there is no further paperwork that would bare her new married name. She turned to her ‘now’ husband and asked him for a dollar bill. She then turned to me and asked me for a pen; we have markers now. The new bride proceeded to sign her new married name on the dollar bill. She then handed it back to her husband and asked him to sign his name also. He did as she asked. She gave the bill then to me and said “please hang this on your ceiling”, which is thirteen feet high. It took a little time to figure how to get it up there without pulling out the ladder. With some improvising we did come up with a wonderful method on placing the signed money on the 13 foot high Cyprus beams. Now, as to how we get it up there, that you will find out when you come here to get married. Needless to say, the brand new ‘wife’ was happy as could be to sign her new married name. The chapel’s ceiling has money from around the world among other forms of payment methods including; a maxed out credit card, a money order, a personal check, a direct deposit payroll check that has no value. We have Saddam Hussein Iraqi money, an Australian bill made out of plastic, Pesos, Euros, money from Honduras, Guatemala and many other countries. We have a bill from a part of the old Russia, Kazakhstan, which is not even allowed out of the country. We even have an authentic shrunken dollar bill; only in New Orleans! As far as the US bills hanging, we have; the one dollar, two dollar, five dollar, ten dollar, twenty dollar and one hundred dollar bill. We do not have a fifty dollar bill yet. Couples come back often to visit the money they hung and to say hi. It is always nice to see them again. Oh, by the way, we don’t have an IOU either. We are hoping a future couple will bring one to add to the collection. And the best part of it all, everything that was hung, every bill from every country, was sealed with a kiss. And to this day, no one has asked to have their half of the dollar taken down. We like to believe that the kiss has stuck them to the ceiling for ever. That is the true story of the money on the ceiling of the French Quarter Wedding Chapel. We hope you enjoyed it and remember to bring your bill with you when coming to get married so you can seal it with a kiss that will last forever. Offering Traditional and Civil ceremonies, as well as hand fasting!
